WELCOME TO WHITESTONE CHAPEL

WELCOME AND CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader:  Do you not know? Have you not heard?

The Lord is the everlasting God,

the Creator of the ends of the earth.

All:  He will not grow tired or weary,

and his understanding no one can fathom.

Leader:    He gives strength to the weary

and increases the power of the weak.

Even youths grow tired and weary,

and young men stumble and fall;

All:   But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.

They will soar on wings like eagles;

they will run and not grow weary,

they will walk and not be faint.

OPENING HYMN:  HOW GREAT THOU ART

CALL TO CONFESSION

Leader:  The gospel calls us to turn away from sin and be faithful to Christ.

As we offer ourselves to him in penitence and faith,

We renew our confidence and trust in his mercy.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

All: Dear Heavenly Father, we lower our heads before you and we confess that we have too often forgotten that we are yours. Sometimes we carry on our lives as if there was no God and we fall short of being a credible witness to You. For these things we ask your forgiveness and we also ask for your strength. Give us clear minds and open hearts so we may witness to You in our world. Remind us to be who You would have us to be regardless of what we are doing or who we are with. Hold us to You and build our relationship with You and with those You have given us on earth.

TIME OF QUIET REFLECTION

ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS

WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT — 1 John 2:1-2

Leader: My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if  anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defence—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. (NIV)

STATEMENT OF FAITH

All: With all Christians everywhere, we believe in one God, who made everything.

The Father sent his Son, Jesus, to die on the cross.

Jesus rose again as Lord of all, that we might live forever with him.

God sent his Holy Spirit to live in us that we might grow more like Jesus.

Amen.

READING: JOHN 3:1-16

read by Sarah Cronje

Jesus Teaches Nicodemus

3 Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.”

Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.”

“How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!”

Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”

“How can this be?” Nicodemus asked.

10 “You are Israel’s teacher,” said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things? 11 Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. 12 I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? 13 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man. 14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15 that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.”

16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
