PRE SERVICE SONG:  ABOVE ALL

CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader: ‘Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.’ Col 3:1

All: Father God, be with us in our worship, in our prayers and in our reading of your word. Be with us in our fellowship one with another. Be with us in our agreement and disagreement. Be with us in our unity and diversity. Be with us as we grow together, born again and joined together into your heavenly family.

Leader: For God so loved the world

AllThat he gave his one and only Son

Leader: That whoever believes in him shall not perish

AllBut have eternal life.

OPENING HYMN : HOLY, HOLY, HOLY, LORD GOD ALMIGHTY

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Leader: ‘Set your minds on things above, and not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you will also appear with him in glory’ (Col 3:3).

Leader: For those times when our eyes have been short-sighted, when we have failed to see your vision for our lives,

All:  Forgive us Lord and help us focus on you.

Leader: For those times when we choose not to give, but to store up treasures for our own use.

AllForgive us Lord and help us focus on you.

Leader:  For those times when your sacrificial love has meant less than it should,

All:  Forgive us Lord and help us focus on you

Leader: For those times when our feet have stayed firmly in this world, rather than walking in your footsteps,

AllForgive us Lord and help us focus on you.

Leader: For all those times when we have failed to acknowledge in our own hearts that we are a new creation, raised to life with Christ,

AllFather, forgive.

TIME OF SILENT CONFESSION

Leader: ‘Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourself with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another, forgive as the Lord forgave you. And above all this put on love

Allwhich binds all these in perfect unity.’

STATEMENT OF FAITH

Leader: We say the Creed together:

All:  I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.  He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.  He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried.  He descended to the dead.  On the third day he rose again.  He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.  I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

Amen.

READING:  HAGGAI 1:1-15

read by Pam Cuddington

A Call to Build the House of the Lord

In the second year of King Darius, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the Lord came through the prophet Haggai to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest:

This is what the Lord Almighty says: “These people say, ‘The time has not yet come to rebuild the Lord’s house.’”

Then the word of the Lord came through the prophet Haggai: “Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your panelled houses, while this house remains a ruin?”

Now this is what the Lord Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your ways. You have planted much, but harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it.”

This is what the Lord Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your ways. Go up into the mountains and bring down timber and build my house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honoured,” says the Lord. “You expected much, but see, it turned out to be little. What you brought home, I blew away. Why?” declares the Lord Almighty. “Because of my house, which remains a ruin, while each of you is busy with your own house. 10 Therefore, because of you the heavens have withheld their dew and the earth its crops. 11 I called for a drought on the fields and the mountains, on the grain, the new wine, the olive oil and everything else the ground produces, on people and livestock, and on all the labour of your hands.”

12 Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest, and the whole remnant of the people obeyed the voice of the Lord their God and the message of the prophet Haggai, because the Lord their God had sent him. And the people feared the Lord.

13 Then Haggai, the Lord’s messenger, gave this message of the Lord to the people: “I am with you,” declares the Lord. 14 So the Lord stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of the whole remnant of the people. They came and began to work on the house of the Lord Almighty, their God, 15 on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month.

BENEDICTION

Leader: Eternal God, Maker of all things and our gracious Father:

All:  We praise You for Your fatherly love which has cherished man throughout the centuries, suffered his follies, rebuked his failures and spared no sacrifice to save him from ignorance, sin and death of the soul.

We thank and praise You for caring for our souls, which placed us within the family of believers, sheltered us in the church,  nourished us on Your word and sacraments,  and gave us a perfect revelation of Yourself in Jesus Christ Your Son. To You, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit  be the glory now and forever.

Amen.
