WELCOME TO WHITESTONE CHAPEL

PRESERVICE SONG:  I WILL FOLLOW

PSALM 86

Leader: Among the gods there is none like you, O Lord; no deeds can compare with yours.   All the nations you have made will come and worship before you, O Lord; they will bring glory to your name.

AllFor you are great and do marvellous deeds; You alone are God.

Leader:  Teach me your way, O Lord, and I will walk in your truth; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name.

All:  I will praise you, O Lord my God, with all my heart; I will glorify your name forever. For great is your love toward me;  You have delivered me from the depths of the grave.

OPENING HYMN:   I WILL SING THE WONDROUS STORY

INVITATION TO CONFESSION

Leader:  Christ himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds we have been healed. So, let us acknowledge our failure and disobedience, and return to the Lord with penitence and faith.

PRAYERS OF CONFESSION

Leader:  O King and Father, your Son died only to be raised. Now give us to die to our sin in repentance, so we may rise to new life and power.

All:  Though you should guide us, we inform ourselves. Though you should rule us,  we control ourselves. Though you should fulfil us, we console ourselves.

Leader:  For we think your truth too high, your will too hard, your power too remote, your love too free. But they are not! And without them,  we are of all people most miserable.

All:  Now heal our confused minds with your word, heal our divided wills with your law, heal our troubled consciences with your love, heal our anxious hearts with your presence, all for the sake of your Son, who loved us and gave himself for us.

Amen.

STATEMENT OF FAITH

Leader:  Now let us tell God together that we believe in him:

All:  I believe that God is my Father in heaven.  I believe That he made the world, that he gives me life, that he helps me grow. I believe that Jesus is the Son of God and the Son of Mary. Jesus shows me that God is love. Jesus lived and died for me.  Jesus is alive now, alive in me, and in my neighbour.  I believe in the Holy Spirit who helps me love others, who makes me holy, who helps me to know God better. I believe in God’s family, the church. I believe that I will be happy with God for ever and ever.

Amen

Suffering for Being a Christian

12 Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. 13 But rejoice inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed. 14 If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. 15 If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler. 16 However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name. 17 For it is time for judgment to begin with God’s household; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God? 18 And,

“If it is hard for the righteous to be saved,
what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?”

19 So then, those who suffer according to God’s will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good.

HYMN:  SERVANT KING
